Bald Head Island, historically Smith Island, is located on the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic Ocean. A twenty-minute ferry ride from Southport, this island, steeped in history, seems purpose-built for summer fun. The island is best known for the over 200-year-old “Old Baldy” lighthouse and is nationally recognized for its prime sea turtle nesting grounds. With few full-time residents, no cars, and the beautiful Atlantic coast, it is no wonder this is a favorite place to visit while visiting the North Carolina coast.
Getting There from Ocean Isle Beach
Bald Head Island is approximately an hour and forty-five-minute trip from Ocean Isle (including the twenty-minute ferry ride). Head north on Highway 17 to Highway 211 S (Southport-Supply Rd SE). Follow the signs for the ferry terminal/marina. Your trip begins in this quaint port town. (Note: Southport is another great day trip).
You will catch the Bald Head Island Ferry departs. Since no cars are allowed on the island, you will board the passenger ferry at Deep Point Marina at 1301 Ferry Road in Southport, NC. Tickets are all roundtrip and cost $23.00 for adults and $12.00 for children (3-12). Visitors are welcome to bring a bicycle. Parking is available at the marina for an additional $12.00. Getting Around Bald Head Island
Since Bald Head Island doesn’t allow cars, you must find alternative transportation once there. Two main options for getting around are bikes and golf carts. It’s hard not to have fun on a bike or golf cart! Bike rentals are easy, with several rental options. The friendly staff at Coastal Urge can help you with all your bike rental needs. If you are not in the mood for Tour de Bald Head, rent a golf cart. Golf carts are a fantastic way to get around the island, particularly if you are planning on a long day, need transportation for someone with special needs, or want to enjoy the cool breeze in your hair as you zip around the island like a local. Even the police and EMTs ride golf carts! The island’s roads are specifically designed for golf cart traffic. Cary Cart Company has locations in Ocean Isle and Bald Head Island. Reservations can be made in advance and are strongly recommended during summer months.
Finally, feel free to wander the island on foot. Many attractions, such as the lighthouse and restaurants, are within easy walking distance from the ferry terminal.
Bald Head Island Itinerary
Bald Head Island offers the day tripper plenty of opportunities to explore this majestic island. History, food, and outdoor activities abound. Here is a fun way to spend a day on the island.
- Old Baldy: This is a must-see. North Carolina’s oldest standing lighthouse allows you to travel back in time. Built in 1817, this NC lighthouse is over 200 years old. Admission to the lighthouse is $8.00 for adults and $5.00 for children (3-12). Children under 3 are free. The climb to the top is up a steep, narrow staircase with a view that is worth the hike. Be sure to take some time to explore the Keeper’s Cottage, which includes the Smith Island Museum of History. (Bald Head Island was originally named Smith Island). - JULES’ Salty Grub & Island Pub: No adventure is a success on an empty stomach. After hiking all those stairs at Old Baldy, it’s time to refuel and relax. JULES’ Salty Grub & Island Pub is in the heart of the Bald Head Island Marina and offers a delightful waterfront dining experience. Enjoy the popular ‘Seafood Steampot’ (when available) or other items from their eclectic menu. - Riverside Outdoor Recreation: Now that you have some calories to burn, head to Riverside Outdoor Recreation for various adventures. Kayaking (guided or rental), surfboard, paddleboard, and bike rentals are all available. The adventure-loving staff will gladly introduce you to this island’s incredible variety of adventures. With the sun setting, it’s time to head back to Southport. Take a few moments to enjoy a stroll around the beautiful downtown. Pick up that last gift, and make a final quick stop at the historic post office to mail a postcard. Then, grab an ice cream at Flava’s Ice Cream Shop before returning to Ocean Isle Beach.
